Road to the Horse by Pat Parelli

There are only a few days left before the Road to the Horse competition starts. In fact, we will leave Ocala on Tuesday so we can be in Tennessee on time for the dress rehearsals on Wednesday. Several people have been asking what I have been doing to prepare for this colt starting competition. Besides losing 35 lbs. and getting fit, I have been riding more young horses every day and have been riding cutting and cow horses non-stop. The other thing worth a mention is that in the last 3 months I have competed in several cutting and cow horse shows. This has given me the mental and emotional fitness needed in high level sports. I feel ready!!!

This seems to be one of the most talked about events with such high anticipation. It is unbelievable. Everywhere I go people have been wishing me good luck. Even most of the other trainers and people I have never met come up to me in places like restaurants and the grocery store and say they can’t wait to hear the results.

I just want everyone to know that my goal is to share the ART of COLT STARTING not just the job of it! Principles, purpose and timing are the skills that are being tested here. I will make sure the colt that I get to play with is the real winner here by putting the relationship first. This demo should be interesting, beautiful and educational.

Thanks for your support

Good luck! :D I never really noticed actually, until you pointed it out, how many people focus on winning. There are different types of winning and if you put that relationship first and inspire more people to come join, then you win with or without the ribbon. :D (Not to mention that colt will be pretty darn lucky too!) I wish you the best of Luck!!!! :D And Have FUN.

I watched 3 colt starters in KS. 2 weeks ago, at the KS horse fair and 2 of them lost site of the colts for the prize. Pushing and rushing them didn’t work anyway as the judges awarded it the other guy who never lost sight of the real prize.
Have fun getting the message out. Great job on the prep.

I’ll be watching RTTH to learn something. Each and every time I watch Pat, I learn something. My horse so appreciates this.

Go, Pat, GO! Show them how it’s done (naturally). I’ll be there in spirit. What I want to know is, how did you lose 35 lbs.? You look fantastic! What’s the secret?

I’m rooting for you, Pat, as this is such a huge opportunity to show so many people what keeping the relationship first looks like, even in such a goal-oriented, direct-line thinking type of event. To me, the horse’s interests and this event seem so diametrically opposed, I will be eager to see how you stay true to the horse!

I am so thrilled that I will be able to watch you in Road to the Horse on webcam. It will be such a thrill to see you start a colt. I know that no matter how the competition turns out, it will be as you have promised—the colt you get to play with will be the real winner!
The very best wishes to you!

Thanks for sharing your preparations and expectations for the colt start. It is truly inspirational yet practical and has given me ideas for how to analyse the preparation I might need to be a good leader for my horse and to prepare myself emotionally, physically and mentally! Can’t wait to see the results and best of luck Pat! (not that you need it!)
